Class Ratings for USB Flash Media

Here is some useful information related to the 'Class' rating on Flash Media (Compact Flash, SD Cards, etc) used to save and transfer video and photo/image files between cameras/camcorders and computers/Casablanca editors.
You will find this class rating on the packaging or in the online catalog when searching for a new device to support your video/photo work.  This makes it more clear what 'Class' you should seek in Flash Media and the Reader that supports the transfer from that card into your editor:

USB Flash Media Ratings *
Class 2 : H.264 video recording, MPEG-4, MPEG-2 video recording
Class 4: MEPG-2 (HDTV) video recording, DSC consecutive shooting
Class 6: Mega-pixel DSC consecutive shooting, professional video camera
Class 10: Full HD video recording, HD still consecutive shooting

The long and short of this information is that most of the digital cameras, HDSLR as well as Point and Shoot cameras recommend a minimum of Class 6 for video recording.  I have done a lot of reading on this topic and while some suggest that going with a Class 10 card may be overkill, others suggest it is far better to have more capacity than you need than get stuck with a card that is not fast enough when you need it!

For my photo and video digital card recordings I have used product from both San Disk and Transcend.  For colleagues wishing to order the more affordable Transcend SD Card - you may use the following link (which connects to my Amazon Affiliate Account):
