Ask The Expert: Should I De-interlace Video Before Loading to YouTube?

QUESTION: I have a client that needs me to give them some edited HD footage from my Casablanca S-2000 on a memory stick so they can add it to you-tube. I shoot on Canon XH-A1 at 601 1140x1080i am I supposed to de-interlace this for you-tube and then how do I transfer to a memory stick?

ANSWER: Regarding the subject of De-interlace, I practice and have been strongly recommending to my website members and learners in other my other platforms to de-interlace any video they produce prior to uploading/sharing on any video hosting website (YouTube, Vimeo, Facebook, etc).

If you're shooting and editing in a Progressive Project setting in your Casablanca then this is not required as the footage is already de-interlaced (Progressive).  If not, I use the MovieMode which is found under the Special button in the Edit Menu of both SmartEdit and Bogart OS.

For confirmation - here is a quote from the Google Support Page for 'YouTube>Help>Upload Instructions & Settings' : "Content at 1080i 60, should be deinterlaced, going from 60 interlaced fields per second to 30 progressive frames per second before uploading. "

This page also specifies the compatible formats, note that each of these are posted at P (Progressive not Interlace).
